Basic Guidelines For Water Damage Restoration On Furniture And Appliances by Beth Olignerf
When flooding occurs in a home, the house structure is not the only one affected but everything else inside the home, including furniture and appliances. The homeowner will sustain big financial losses if he or she will delay or prolong water damage restoration on these items for a long time.
The following outlines some basic guidelines in performing water damage restoration for common furniture and appliances:
* Wooden and Upholstered Furniture
When performing water damage restoration to wet wooden furniture, the homeowner should bear in mind that wet wood can crack or deform if dried under the sun. It would be best to let the furniture dry through air blowing. So, after cleaning the wooden surface with a detergent solution, use electric fans or blowers to dry the wood. Separate detachable parts for easier and faster drying. Some of the glued parts could detach or loosen while soaked in water. Just let it dry then re-attach, however, you need to scrape off the old glue residues first.
Water damage restoration for Upholstered furniture would be more difficult to perform, as you have to contend with the stuffing. Organic stuffing would definitely have to be discarded if the furniture has been soaked in floodwater for a long time. Other synthetic fibers or materials used as stuffing can be cleaned and dried. Leather upholstery would be easier to clean as cloth or fiber types may need the use of wet-dry vacuum cleaners.
For expensive furniture, it would be best to leave the water damage restoration to professionals. If you would really like to try it on your own, the best way to do it would be to slow dry the item. Encase the furniture in cling wrap or polyethylene sheets then attach an opening to a dehumidifier to remove the moisture. You can also put in desiccants inside to hasten the drying process.
* Electrical and Electronic Appliances
Do not turn on any appliances that were subjected to floodwaters until they are completely dry. There is a possibility that water particles are still embedded in the internal components that would cause a short circuit if electricity were passed through. Water damage restoration for these appliances is not as simple as letting them dry out on their own. Parts and components have to be disassembled so these can dry out separately. It would be best to seek help from skilled technicians so further damage would be prevented.
* Heating Systems
Systems that were affected by floodwater should be disassembled to check for any water remnants. Blower motors, switches, controls, and other electrical parts should be checked, preferably by qualified technicians, to see if they are still functional. Air ducts should be cleaned for debris and if necessary, should be properly replaced.
