Water Damage Restoration Of A Flooded Basement Can Be Easy by Chris Blastoyout

I have become quite an expert in water damage restoration amd can get my basement dry very quikluy. No, do not think that my basement is always wet. It is only when the storms, the nor'easters or the hurricanes strike that results in flooded basement.

These days however I do not worry so much about the basement being flooded. The basement waterproofing measures that I have taken have considerably reduced my flooded basement problems. The last East Coast storm that occurred flooded the basements of many folks around my house but my basement did not face much problem.

Drying a flooded basement

I have engaged in several methods and through trail and error I have discovered three steps that are involved in drying a flooded basement.

1. The first step is to drain the excess water from the basement.
2. The second step is mopping the floor.
3. The final step is drying the area.

A small pump or two from your local hardware store would help you in drying your basement when it gets flooded.
The portable pumps can be equipped with a drain hose or a garden hose. A large drain hose is a much better option as a pump with a higher capacity would be able to drain more water. It is important that you buy enough drain hose to be able to throw the water far away from the foundation of the house.

Mopping the basement floor
After the water has been drained from the area, there would be big puddles all over the basement. I have realized that a good way you can push the standing water into the sump hole is by using big floor squeegees. However if there is no floor squeegee at hand, you can very well use a shop broom.

After the water is removed you might want to use some disinfectant in the basement region. This would also remove the unpleasant odor that had got into your basement with the flood waters.

Drying the basement

After the removal of the standing water you would next have to face the water damage restoration problem of dampness from the flooded basement. This dampness often results in the formation of mold and mildew. This is when you start using the humidifier. For best results the dehumidifier would have to operate 24/7 for many days to fully dry the basement air and the saturated concrete walls.

Most of the water damage restoration dehumidifiers come with an auto-shutoff switch that turns off once the catch bucket is full. While this feature might be okay under normal conditions, it is quite a problem when the dehumidifier operates without any break. It is a good idea to modify the catch bucket to prevent going up and down the basement stairs several times in a day.

It is good if there is a drain fitted to the bucket to enable you to attach a garden hose. This would allow you to operate your dehumidifier continuously till the flooded basement region is completely dry. The drain hose can be routed to the sump pump hole and it would work just fine.
