October Homeowner Tips - Home Remodeling by Lifschitz
* Check and clean or replace your furnace filters on a monthly basis during the heating season.
* Have your furnace or heating system serviced by a qualified service company (every two years for a gas furnace and every year for an oil furnace).
* Bleed air from the hot water radiators, and turn the gas furnace pilot light on.
* Vacuum electric baseboard heaters to remove dust, remove the grilles on forced-air heating systems and vacuum inside the ducts.
* If you have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), clean the outside air intake grill, the filters inside the unit, and the core, and pour water down the condensate drain to test it.
* Replace window screens with storm windows, and ensure all windows, doors and skylights shut tightly, including the door between your house and garage.
* Ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation wall to prevent water from draining into the basement.
* Clean leaves from eavestroughs and downspouts to ensure proper drainage from the roof, and check chimneys for nests or other obstructions.
* Cover the outside of air conditioners, and drain and store outdoor hoses. Close the valve to the outdoor hose connection, and drain the faucet (unless it is frost proof).
* Winterize landscaping by storing outdoor furniture, preparing gardens and, if necessary, protecting young trees or bushes for winter.
* Clean your lawnmower and other garden tools before storing. Give all the metal parts of your tools a wipe with an oiled rag to prevent rusting. Drain the fuel from gas-powered machines and run the engine until the lines are clear. Drain the oil and replace it. Clean caked-on grass and debris.
* Clean your barbecue and store it in a protected place for the winter. (Remember, never store propane tanks indoors.)
* Wash windows to let in the maximum heat and light during cold winter days.
* There is still time to plant spring-flowering bulbs, such as tulips, this month. Plant them anytime before the ground freezes. Discourage squirrels from digging up newly-planted bulbs by planting them at a depth of eight to 10 inches below the soil and firmly pressing the soil once you’ve planted the bulbs. Remember to plant bulbs with the pointed end up!
* Protect your rose bushes over the winter by mounding soil around the base to a height of eight to 10 inches.
* Protect new evergreen plantings with burlap to insulate them against cold and salt damage from roadways.
* Protect other plants such as rhododendrons by placing stakes around the perimeter, weaving burlap around the stakes and then filling the space loosely with leaves to insulate the shrub.
* Weed your garden one last time in late October to discourage weed growth in the spring. Cut the lawn for the last time near the end of October.
