UK Gas Safety law changes by Dave Sabri

In the UK, the organisation that vets and accredits gas appliance engineers is no longer Corgi, but a new government agency entitled the Gas Safe Register.

If you're looking to have any kind of gas work done to your home or workplace, no matter how big or small the job, you will now need to find a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the government's official Gas Safe website for a database of registered plumbers engineers and workmen who can help you out safely and legally.

Once you have hired an engineer, you should check their credentials by reading the license number on their Gas Safe Photo ID card, and then enter this information onto the Gas Safe website. If the information given by the site tallies with that presented by the engineer, then you should be ok.

The types of gas work that are covered include: installing, repairing or servicing a gas boiler, any work on a heat producing appliance, for example radiators or your hot water system, if it is connected to either a Natural Gas or LPG (liquid petroleum gas) supply, installing or repairing a gas fire, gas cooker or hob. Some engineers may not be qualified to do all types of gas work so check their credentials carefully before allowing them to start work.

For landlords, the same rules apply. Any gas work that needs to be carried out, including your usual annual boiler services, must only be carried out by a registered Gas Safe engineer. This rule applies no matter if you are renting residential property, bed and breakfast, hotel or hostel rooms, bedsits or even holiday accommodation. If you suspect that your landlord is failing to comply with Gas Safe laws, don't let them get away with it, as they could be playing with your life and safety. Contact the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) if in doubt and they will check o your landlord's gas safety record. If your landlord doesn't comply they could well be prosecuted.
