Different Types of Air Purifiers and Air Purifier Filters by George Woods

There are many different types of air purifiers, and they all use different air purifier filters. An air purifier is a device that keeps the air clean by removing its contaminants. It is commonly marketed to asthmatics, allergy sufferers, and smokers. It can eliminate or reduce second-hand tobacco smoke. It is available in small stand-alone units or larger units that can be attached to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units or air handler units (AHU).

Air purifier filters are not only helpful to people who have allergies due to dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, pollen, and dust, but they can also filter organic compounds and smoke particles which can cause health dangers. Air purifiers today capture such contaminants in order to maintain air cleanliness. Air purifiers also reduce the need for cleaning the room frequently of dust.
There are a lot of purifying techniques used by different air purifiers available in the market today. The most common air purifier uses filter-based purifying techniques that capture airborne particles according to its size. The filter physically captures these particles as air goes through the air purifier. A HEPA filter can remove 0.3 micrometer particles with 99.97% accuracy. A MERV 14 or higher filter has a lower capture rate than the HEPA filter.
The ultraviolet germicidal irradiation air purifier sterilizes air at it passes through UV lamps. Air purifiers of this type are typically free standing. This type of air purifier must have a good filtration system and strategic placement of UV lamps in order for this purifying technique to work effectively.
The activated carbon purifying technique uses carbon to adsorb volatile materials but does not take out larger particles. The activated carbon changes the gas to solid and is usually used with other filter technologies.
The polarized-media electronic air purifier combines elements of passive mechanical filters and electronic air cleaners through an electronically-enhanced media. When unclean air passes the electric field, the airborne particles become polarized and become attached to a fiber media pad which is disposable. This technology is also non-ionizing.
The photocatalytic oxidation is a new technology being used in the HVAC industry. With this kind of system, complete oxidation and degradation of organic contaminants are possible. It is used with other purifying technologies because it is not a filtering technology but a technology to oxidize viruses and bacteria.
An ionizer purifier makes use of electricity to charge gas ions so that airborne particles can adhere to these ions which will in turn be electrostatically attached to a charged collector plate. This technology however has byproducts in the form of ozone and other oxidants.
The liquid ionizer purifier creates electrically charged liquid ions which functions the same as the ionizer purifier. Liquid is fed to the ionization field in order to produce the liquid ions which float through the air attaching to airborne particles. No oxidant or ozone is produced in this process.
In most of these systems, air purifier filters must be replaced from time to time. For the convenience of the homeowner, a
heating & air conditioning contractor can be employed to provide maintenance to air purifiers so that these purifiers function efficiently and effectively.
