When you purchase a fur coat, you are making a serious investment. We all know how luxurious this item is and therefore, it deserves special care. You cannot just drop it off at the dry cleaners and assume everything will be fine and dandy. Fur coats don't require a lot of work, just a little extra thought. With the proper care and storage, your fur coat can retain its beauty for years to come.

Fur is durable. By its very nature it has to be. Furs can obviously handle the cold very well, but not heat. Don't ever place your fur coat near a heater or anything else hot. Also, when storing your fur coat, do not expose it to direct light. This can cause the color to fade. Fur also doesn't mesh well with water. A few drops of rain or snow is fine, but don't wear your coat out in a thunderstorm or snowstorm. This can definitely damage the coat. If the fur coat does come into contact with water, simply shake it out and let it hang out to dry. Don't be tempted to whip out the hair dryer to speed up the process!

Fur coats and friction also don't do very well together. This translates to sitting for hours on end in a car or any other spot for that matter. Use caution when entering and exiting a car. If you are going to be sitting for a long while, it is best to just take the coat off. If it gets chilly, use that super soft fur as a blanket to keep you warm. If any spots become flattened, just shake it out. Got a spot of dirt on your fur coat? Don't put any chemicals on it! It's actually best if you don't clean the coat yourself, but don't take it to the dry cleaners either. You will need to send it to a furrier. They have the supplies necessary to clean the coat. They will use an environmentally friendly cleaning solution, along with sawdust or pumice and a lot of tumbling to remove those tough stains.

If your fur coat comes into contact with some bad odors that need to be removed, there is a simple method for removing the smell. Place the fur coat in a garment bag with fresh coffee grounds in a separate container at the bottom of the bag. Zip up the garment bag to allow the aroma to be absorbed. Stir the coffee grounds daily and check to see if the odor has dissipated. The smell should disappear within in a few days. If the coat smells too must like coffee afterward, leave it outside for a bit in a dry area until the smell leaves.

After winter, your fur coat needs to be stored, and not just hung in the closet. The heat of the summer will seep into your closest and can ruin the fur coat. Never store your coat in a plastic bag. The coat needs to be well ventilated. The best and safest way to store your fur for the summer is to send it to a furrier. They can provide special cold storage spaces to prevent damage and molting. Your fur is a luxury item and should always be treated as such to ensure its longevity.
