INTRODUCTION

There has been significant difference in the field of fiber science and today it is the field where new millennium fibers has become very common. The new millennium fibers that we are going to deal are super fibers, power fibers, perfumed fibers, carbon fibers and fiber as food.

SUPER FIBERS

'The two research groups that are dealing with super fibers are Du Pont, USA and DSM in The Netherlands.
'A new process of liquid crystalline spinning was developed to spin Kevlar from rigid polymer in Du Pont.
'Gel-spinning was developed in the late 1970s by the DSM group headed by Smith & Lemstra.
'DSM introduced polyethylene fiber of high strength.

THE FUTURE OF SUPER FIBERS

'Super fibers are applied in the field of aerospace technology, automobile technology, ocean developments, etc.,
'Super fibers are also for the production of safety/protective materials.
'Super fibers elongate by 3-4%, which reduces the potential for garment manufacture.
'The modulus and tenacity of aramid fiber is 90% and 17%.
'Nowadays, ultra-super-fiber are also produced to meet the needs of human comfortness, social environment.

POWER FIBERS

'Heat-regenerating fibers are produced from ceramic composites which radiates far infra-red radiation.
'Zirconium, magnesium oxide or iron oxide can be blended into synthetic fibers.
'Sportswear, bedsheets, bedcovers, etc.,
'There are two possible ways to insulate heat.
'Solar-alpha is one of the power fibers employed for a downhill skiing suit

POWER FIBERS THAT STORE SOLAR ENERGY

'Zirconium carbide are used for absorbing and storing heat in domestic water heaters and large scale condensers.
'Zirconium carbide reflects infra red radiation of wavelength of 2 m and absorbs light energy of short wavelength of less than 2 m.
'Solar-alpha sportswear suppresses the oxygen consumption in the muscle in an extremely cold conditions.

PERFUMED FIBERS

'Perfumed fiber â€Esprit de Fleurs†produced by Kanebo was
demonstrated at the â€Exhibition of New Materials in Daily
Lifeâ€, in 1987 in Tokyo.
' The sales of these perfumed fibers are more than
US$20,000,000 annually.
' This Esprit de Fleurs contains microcapsules of about 5-10m
in diameter which in turn contains perfume essence.
' Perfume is released when microcapsules are pressed and
broken.
' Printing, dipping or padding is only used for binding
microcapsules to textiles.
' Perfume essence can be made from Jasmine, Rose, Lily, etc.,
' T-shirts, scarves, neckties, handkerchiefs, stockings, etc.,

CARBON FIBER

'The wood industry is a typical biomass industry and the research is going on to convert wood into more valuable products.
'The Oji Paper Co. Ltd. produces carbon fiber directly from the wood.
'Wood is composed of several components such as cellulose, lignin, etc.,
'Cellulose is characterised by its elongational fibrous property, whereas lignin is responsible for high carbonisation yield.
'The Oji Paper Co. Ltd. was possible to spin wood directly in a suitable solvent such as phenol.
'The resulting fiber is thermoset for a short time at 250C and then carbonised to yield carbon fiber of better quality.
'The physical characteristics of these carbon fibers are similar to that of Kynol fiber.
'Powdery or granular active carbons of the conventional type have also been used as catalyst carriers, for solvent recovery, the decoloration of sake and sugar, etc., within the food and chemical industries.
'Because of its high production cost, low carbonisation yields, so these fibers are not used commercially at present.

FIBER AS FOOD

'Dietary fibers are edible and used to reduce the probability of cancer induction in the digestive organs.
'20-35g of dietary fiber is said to be necessary for good health according to the individual’s weight.
'Cellulose is the main component of the dietary fiber.
'If the cellulose content exceeds, the taste deteriorates so that it becomes unedible.
'Asahi Chemical Industry Co. developed a new food additive-Sekicel.

'Sekicel is a fibrous material from cellulose which is pleasant to eat made from a homogeneous solution of alkali-soluble cellulose and starch.
'Two types of Sekicel product are available commercially where one is a wet type of cut fibers and the other a dry type of milled fibers.
'Sekicel is mostly used in processed foods such as pastry, powdery or granular appearance, crab meat & shark’s fin and ground pollock meat.
